Eric Wynalda - US Men's National Team
Wynalda grew up in Westlake Village, CA. As a child his team, the Westlake Wolves, won the state championship in AYSA soccer, as Wynalda scored more goals than the entire division his team played in, combined 56 goals in 16 games. He later went to Westlake High School where he was a three-time All-State selection and a club teammate of national player Cobi Jones. He attended San Diego University, where he scored 34 goals and had 24 assists during his three seasons. SDSU played in the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship game where they lost to the Clemson Tigers. Wynalda joined the USSF National Soccer Team in 1990 and after the World Cup, Wynalda signed as an on-loan player from the USSF to the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks of the American Professional Soccer League. During his three seasons with the Blackhawks he was only able to play in a handful of games, while devoting most of his time to the National Team. Wynalda spent the 92-93 and 93-94 seasons in Germany playing for several different teams. Wynalda came back to the States in 1996, signing a Major League Soccer (MLS) contact with the San Jose Clash. On April 6, 1996 Wynalda scored the first goal in league history in its inaugural game as the Clash vs. D.C. United 1-0 and was named the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year. After the 1998 World Cup, his 3rd, he returned to the Clash. Wynalda retired from the U.S. National Team as the all-time leading scorer with 34 goals in 106 appearances. Landon Donovan tied the record on 2007. Wynalda has turned his talents to the airways and is a soccer analyst for ESPN and was one of the main analysts for ESPN and ABC during the 2007 MLS season.
