Royal was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the Second Round (# 42 overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. In his first year in the NFL, Royal had 91 receptions for 980 yards including five touchdowns.

Royal played his collegiate ball at Virginia Tech. While there he had 119 receptions for 1,778 yards including 12 touchdowns.
